Visualisation as a Basis for Learning

In the past, the junior doctor would stand next to the surgeon, trying to catch a glimpse of the operating field. There was little to see, and what was visible was hard to interpret. With an observer tube, this changes fundamentally: the assistant sees exactly the same as the surgeon, with the same magnification, in real-time. Suddenly, explanations become comprehensible: “Do you see the discolouration on the promontory? That's where we will drill."

The sterile assistant also benefits. Those who can anticipate the surgical steps hand over the correct instrument at the right moment. This makes the procedure quicker and safer. The observer tube transforms the assistant’s role from reactive to proactive.

For larger groups or remote transmission, video systems are advisable. The integrated HD cameras from Karl Kaps transmit the surgical image to monitors in the operating theatre or lecture halls. Live surgeries become teaching sessions without compromising the sterility of the operating area.
